| " I am drawn to landscapes, particularly those with architecture and water in them and prefer to paint plein air whenever possible. I often use these plein air paintings as a basis for larger studio works.
My watchword in a painting is simplicity. This includes shapes, values, colors, compositions and details, in short every aspect of a painting.
When starting a painting, my first step, before the first brush stroke, is to identify the essence of what the painting is about, why I am painting it and what it is that I want to say about the scene. This simplifications and clarification makes the paintings go much easier and greatly increases the chances for success. When everything works in a painting there is tremendous satisfaction and it is worth all the effort." |
| Daly Smith is an architect residing in Macon, Georgia. He approaches his artwork much as he does his architecture – striving to create design that is both beautiful and simple by identifying and emphasizing the key elements. His ability to pare down the essentials of a scene is one of the hallmarks of his style.
Growing up in Macon, Georgia, Daly loved to draw and his interest let him to Georgia Tech where he earned a degree in Architecture. After college he returned to Macon where he is the owner of his own architectural firm. In 1991 he resumed his love of art. Enrolling at the Wesleyan Center for the Arts, he studied with local artist Marianne Dunn for several years and has been painting ever since. Daly has won numerous awards for his art and his work hangs in collections throughout the Southeast. |
