There isn’t a time when Carey can remember not being interested in art. As a child his fascination with drawing was obvious and his natural talent was clear. Having talented artists on both sides of his family, an architect father and a portrait painter aunt, his abilities seemed innate. After graduating from high school, Carey took a job with Abstein Gallery, Atlanta’s largest contemporary gallery at the time. There he learned every aspect of the fine art and custom framing business. He began showing his own work there in 1999 and was well received by art lovers and collectors. He worked with Paul Abstein up until Paul’s untimely death in 2004, at which time he bought the gallery and reopened it as Watson Gallery just down the street. Carey’s work is often described as whimsical, clever, unique and exciting, depending on the piece. He is versatile in both his style and the mediums in which he chooses to work in. Constant inspiration from the world around him propels him to create new and sometimes even controversial works. His work is surprisingly fresh, inventive and incapable of being boxed in by expectations. |
